Anaemia is a condition that develops when you have fewer red blood cells than normal or you have less haemoglobin than normal in each blood cell. Haemoglobin is a protein contained in red blood cells that binds to oxygen and takes oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body.

Symptoms include:

  • Pale skin

  • Fatigue

  • Lack of energy

  • Tiring easily

  • Breathlessness

Some people are at more risk of developing anaemia than others, these include:

  • People with colorectal cancer, stomach ulcers, Crohn's disease and coeliac disease

  • People with reduced gastric acid due to surgery or medication
